The Faronics Content Library has a new white paper that discusses the emergence of whitelist-based technology as a response to the drawbacks found in much of the traditional blacklist-based software currently used to fight malware. Faronics Anti-Executable uses whitelist technology to provide a way to ensure all programs and applications loaded as part of a standard system configuration are the only ones authorized to execute; this effectively blocks almost all forms of malware and prevents any unauthorized executable from ever installing or running.
