Modesto City Schools saving $300K annually with Power Save

EDTECH Magazine recently wrote a news story about how schools are using the latest technologies to save money and increase their ROI. The following excerpt discusses Faronics Power Save and its energy and financial savings benefits.

"To reduce its energy bill, California’s Modesto City Schools installed remote power management tools that will automatically shut down the district’s PCs at night, a move that will save roughly $300,000 a year in electricity costs, says Harold Rhodes, the district’s Supervisor of Computer Systems.

It is district policy to turn off computers at day’s end, but many computers are left on all night and through the weekend. “We can tell people to turn the computers off until we’re blue in the face, and many still won’t do it,” says Stan Trevena, the district’s Director of Information and Technology Services.

In February, the district installed Faronics’ Power Save software on 6,200 PCs essentially for free through a rebate program from its power company. The IT department initially will pay $62,000 — $10 per PC — and the utility will send a full rebate once it verifies the software’s installation." Read the full story.

Faronics Celebrates 10 Years of Deep Freeze at NECC 2009

Faronics is proud to announce that a new version of Deep Freeze is now available—just in time to showcase to attendees of NECC 2009 and to mark the 10th birthday of Deep Freeze! Over the years Faronics' flagship system consistency software has gained a number of innovative features that have enhanced the bulletproof reboot-to-restore protection it has offered since day one. Ten years later, Deep Freeze is deployed on eight million computers and continues to help organizations do more with less by maximizing the value of their existing IT investment.

Newly released Deep Freeze v6.5 introduces several exciting features such as the ability to create multiple spaces where data can be retained over restarts. These spaces—known as ThawSpaces—can be optionally hidden to deter end-user access and tampering. A new events scheduler now provides greater flexibility in scheduling software updates, while the Enterprise Console can now remotely deploy, execute, and control software on workstations. Faronics is also happy to announce that the highly requested ability to display customizable warning messages prior to workstation maintenance events has also been added. Users can optionally be allowed to cancel any events to prevent their computing session from being disrupted. Read the full press release.

New Versions of Faronics Power Save Improve Windows and Mac Computer Energy Management

Faronics is proud to announce the release of Power Save v3.3 for Windows and v3.0 for Mac computers. Both versions introduce feature additions and enhancements to Power Save as well as tighter integration with Core Console, Faronics’ enterprise computer management tool. Core Console provides easy deployment, scheduling, and control abilities for a number of the company’s products.

Faronics was the first to bring to market a multi-platform computer energy management solution that worked on both Windows and Mac computers. Mac computers running Power Save are now able to report back to Faronics Core Console, which simplifies savings report generation in environments with both Windows and Mac versions of Power Save deployed.

Core Console can consolidate the savings from the Windows and Mac computers and generate a single report for the entire deployment. This makes it easier for organizations to measure and verify their Power Save return on investment and see the savings through one reporting system.

Power Save's reporting has also been enhanced with Energy Consumption Profiles that contain the energy consumption values for Apple's Mac computer product line. This enables Core Console to automatically detect the Mac computer type, assign the corresponding power consumption values, and generate a report using these numbers. Both these features represent evolutionary steps towards Power Save for Windows and Mac being unified under a single console, and as a testament to Faronics' commitment towards advancing the energy efficiency of Windows and Mac computers. Read the full press release.

Faronics Anti-Executable v3.3 Advances Enterprise White List Software Protection

Faronics is proud to announce the release of Anti-Executable v3.3 for Windows, which introduces a number of new features to Faronics' white list based application control software, such as the ability to employ on demand and scheduled maintenance modes that make system updates and application installations quick and effortless. Support for Windows Server 2008 has also been added to this release. Both these feature additions enhance Anti-Executable's ability to lower IT helpdesk requests and reduce system vulnerabilities by ensuring only the applications added to Anti-Executable's white list are able to run. All other applications—whether they are unauthorized, unwanted, or simple unnecessary—are blocked from running. Read the full press release.

Faronics Featured in Scott Fosseen's Video Blog

Scott Fosseen, Systems Engineer for Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency, stopped by the Faronics booth at Interop 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Scott has an interesting way of taking notes at tradeshows -- he asks exhibitors to record a one minute summary of their products and value offerings, then shares the clips with the rest of his team back home. This year Scott decided to share his videos on his blog so that other members of the K-12 technology community are able to view them. Check out http://interop09-k12.posterous.com to watch the Faronics clip.
PCs protected by the Freeze

Faronics Deep Freeze was recently given a great review by The Australian Financial Review. The article, written by Peter Moon, showcases Deep Freeze's strengths and ability to return a computer to its clean and fully-functional state with every system start. In fact, Mr. Moon writes, "In any setting where you don’t want your working PC to be fouled up, Deep Freeze is gold. Public computers, training machines, shared notebooks and any device within striking distance of a teenager are all candidates for the Deep Freeze treatment. But so are corporate networks that want to ensure a stable, predictable environment without aggressively locking down every desktop." Read the full article .

Faronics releases new versions of Core Console, Anti-Executable, and WINSelect

Faronics is happy to make three new version announcements this week, starting with the latest version of its enterprise network management platform, Faronics Core Console v2.4. This release features several enhancements to performance and workstation management, including the ability to schedule, execute, configure tasks on groups of workstations.

Power Save Enterprise, Anti-Executable Enterprise, and WINSelect Enterprise all use Faronics Core Console as their native central management console. Therefore, all of those products inherit the benefits of Core Console v2.4.

Faronics Anti-Executable v3.2 brings forth improved white list management, such as remote white list scanning and support for multiple locations. It is also now possible to search white lists and merge multiple white lists together.

By far the biggest benefit of Faronics WINSelect v7.11 is the fact that configuration changes are now applied immediately, which means IT administrators do not need to perform a logoff/logon cycle when making configuration changes.

For more information on the new features added to each product, read the Release Notes for Anti-Executable and WINSelect.

Faronics Insight and Oklahoma City University

Like many educational institutions, Oklahoma City University invested a significant amount of money into ensuring students had access to the latest computer technology and software. But many of the staff felt that merely placing a computer in front of a student does not necessarily lead to an enhanced and more effective learning environment. In fact, computers often served as a distraction to students in the classroom since they could easily be tempted away from classroom activities by distractions such as games, instant messaging, or the Internet.

“We recognized that placing computers into the classroom was a great way to connect students with the outside world, but it did little to connect students with each other or to the instructor. There was no way for our instructors to communicate with our students in the classroom other than visiting each computer station,” says Ernesto Chávez, Manager of Instructional Technologies and Media Services at Oklahoma City University.

Ernesto and his team started looking for a better way to do things and came across Faronics Insight, a centralized instructor management software that empowers instructors with total control of classroom computers and student attention. Read this case study to learn how Faronics Insight is empowering the instructors at Oklahoma City University with the ability to educate, assist, monitor, and communicate with an entire class from one central computer.

Faronics Power Save Receives A Gold Medal For Green Footprint

Timothy Gard, of MindShare Learning Report, recently reviewed Faronics Power Save. He had a number of positive things to say about Faronics Power Save, and the company, including "I give Faronics Power Save a gold medal for its “green” footprint! After having experienced some less than stellar performers in the past, I would have to say that Faronic’s reputation as a company who means business, especially green business, is worth the investment in Power Save. In a time when we need to be good stewards of our capital and our energy, then Faronics Power Save is a choice that makes good sense!"

Faronics Anti-Executable and Granite School District

Faronics has added a new case study to the Content Library: Faronics Anti-Executable and Granite School District. This latest customer story details how Scott Watson, an Electronics Teacher in Hunter Senior High School, needed a solution to keep unauthorized executables out of the school's computer labs. “We are fortunate in that we have a powerful computer lab,” says Mr. Watson. “We do, however, want to ensure that power is used for educational purposes, and not for classroom distractions such as games, instant messaging, and peer-to-peer file sharing.” Mr. Watson continues, “We found that as the prices for USB flash drives fell, more students were using the drives to bring portable applications and executables into the classroom. This is obviously something we don’t want since the applications students need to complete class assignments are already installed on the computers. Allowing unauthorized programs to run on workstations presents a serious challenge to a teacher’s ability to keep lab computers running and student attention focused.”

Discover how Faronics Anti-Executable solved Granite School District's problem by ensuring only authorized executables are able to run on their student computers.

Faronics Power Save Introduces Wake-on-LAN Relay and Web Wakeup Technology

Faronics Power Save’s reporting feature provides IT administrators with the ability to specify the local energy rates as well as the power consumption levels of the computers and monitors. Version 3.2 introduces support for multiple Energy Consumption Profiles, providing greater flexibility for multiple computer /monitor combinations and increased accuracy to Faronics Power Save’s energy and dollar savings reports. It is now also possible to group workstations via dynamically defined parameters -- such as department, location, user group, and even the above-mentioned Energy Consumption Profiles -- when managing Faronics Power Save through Faronics Core Console. Faronics Core Console is Faronics’ enterprise computer management tool which provides easy deployment, scheduling, and control abilities for a number of the company’s products.

IT administrators can also use Faronics Power Save’s Wake-on-LAN capabilities to switch remote computers on, either on demand or at scheduled times. This is important as it allows computers to remain off during non-business hours, but be powered on in time for a maintenance period. Additionally, IT administrators who have struggled with successfully implementing Wake-on-LAN across subnets will be excited to know that Faronics Power Save makes this an effortless task. Faronics Power Save has the ability to designate workstations on remote subnets as Wake-on-LAN relays. When Core Console attempts to wake up a workstation on a remote subnet, it contacts the WOL relay(s) on that subnet and uses it to re-broadcast the wake up message to the computer(s) on the target subnet. Thanks to this feature, IT administrators are able to manage computers across multiple network subnets without opening network ports or upgrading network equipment. Version 3.2 also introduces the ability to power a workstation on via any web browser.

Improvements to Faronics Power Save’s energy and dollar savings reports have made it easier for organizations to see and share the benefits of reducing their carbon footprint. The newly added Summary Report displays workstation savings by Energy Consumption Profile -- perfect for situations where a macro view of the total savings generated is desired. In v3.2, the Audit mode reports display the projected annual savings as calculated by Faronics Power Save, and reports include an email and print option. Read the full press release.

Deep Freeze Wins District Administration Readers’ Choice Award

The readers of District Administration magazine have selected Faronics Deep Freeze as a Readers’ Choice Top 100 Product of 2008. District Administration readers are the top school administrators in the country, and they know firsthand what works and what does not work within their districts. The winning products were chosen by evaluating readers’ online ratings, new product suggestions, and comments.

“Last year’s decision to have readers select the top 100 and create a separate issue was an overwhelming success. This year we received a tremendous amount of product recommendations, making it very difficult to limit the list to just 100. The winning list contains products that our readers have successfully implemented at the district, school, and classroom levels,” says DA Editor Judy Faust Hartnett.

District Administration is a monthly publication covering all of the important topics faced in today’s K12 school systems. Deep Freeze, and the other winners, are featured in a special print issue of District Administration which released on January 16.

Faronics WINSelect and Newburgh Enlarged City School District

Schools often need to deploy computers that offer a limited feature set -- for example, a computer lab designed for young children, an information kiosk in a library, or an administrative machine that needs to be simplified. Limiting a computer’s functions is an important part of protecting a computer’s purpose. Having fully-functional computers placed in environments where only limited-functionality is required carries the possibility of computers being used by students in a distractive or inappropriate way. Find out how Newburgh Enlarged City School District is using Faronics WINSelect to easily tailor the operating system and application functionality of their student workstations to only include the features required for student work. Read the Case Study.

Case Study: Faronics Power Save and Coeur D`Alene School District

Bryan Martin, Coeur D`Alene District`s Director of Maintenance, was looking for ways the Maintenance department could help the district save money. Since Maintenance was the department responsible for paying the district`s energy bill, Bryan saw just how much the district was spending and knew that there was an element of ‘energy waste` involved. He knew that by deploying new technologies and practices, the Maintenance department could play a key role in reducing the district`s energy waste and costs. One area where Mr. Martin wanted to reduce energy use was the Technology department. Classroom computers and monitors were not always being powered down by students and teachers at the end of the school day. Coeur D`Alene District`s Director of Technology, Jean Bengfort, agreed that a computer energy management policy that relied on user action was not practical or effective.

Learn how Coeur D`Alene School District is now saving as much as $300,000 over the course of three years thanks to Faronics` desktop computer energy management solution, Power Save. In fact, Coeur D`Alene School District enjoyed an immediate return on investment with Power Save, thanks to rebates provided by local power authorities that covered the total license cost. Read the Case Study.

TechTarget Covers Faronics Power Save

Greg Shields, Contributing writer for TechTarget, recently wrote an article discussing the energy management options for Vista and Windows Server 2008 systems. In the article, Greg states "The problems with freeware software involve its level of support and available features. The complex process of powering computers off and on within your environment can sometimes be risky. There are often times when middle-of-the-night activities, such as patch management and automated software installation, require Windows systems to be awake to receive updates. In those cases, it is more challenging to use tools like EZ GPO than for-cost solutions like Faronics Power Save.

The Faronics tool goes a step above and beyond what you get with either of the other tools because it enables systems management toolsets to wake up systems as necessary to complete after-hours activities. It also enables power reduction activities to occur based on usage rather than time delays or hard-set hours of the day. Whereas time delays still require a few hours of inactivity before power reduction activities can take place -- and where hard-set hours can impact late-working employees -- the Faronics toolset makes power-reducing decisions based on actual keyboard and mouse movements and processor utilization. This means that as soon as activity ceases, you can begin saving money.

Along with that extensibility, Faronics Power Save is also available at a low cost." Read the full article.

Faronics Deep Freeze Mentioned By University Business Magazine

"Many students and staff have their own computing resources, but there`s also dependence on public machines, such as those found in libraries, and ensuring that these machines are safe can be tricky", says Steven Zink, vice president of information technology and dean of University Libraries at the University of Nevada, Reno. "I`ve seen people walk away from a terminal with all their personal information still on the screen, even banking data," says Zink. "Sometimes they just get distracted and don`t even think about it." The university uses Deep Freeze, a security program from Faronics that resets a computer to its original settings on a regular basis. This erases any stored cookies, input data, and even malware and viruses that may have crept into the computer while it was idle. Read the full article.

Faronics Deep Freeze and the University of Kentucky

This case study demonstrates that Deep Freeze and Microsoft Application Virtualization (also known as App-V and formerly called SoftGrid) are excellent complements to each other. In 2008 the University of Kentucky began incorporating App-V into their computing environments. “We were running into situations where one program was conflicting with another,” says Paul Glenn, University of Kentucky's Student Lab System Administrator. “What App-V gives us is the ability to run individual applications inside a self-contained environment, which keeps the programs from interfering with each other or the operating system itself.” Deep Freeze prevents any configuration drift from taking place, and App-V manages the program environments. If program data needs to be preserved, administrators have the option to either create a ThawSpace (an unprotected area where data can be preserved across sessions) or modify the registry settings to have App-V redirect the data to an alternate local or network drive. Read the case study.

Faronics Anti-Executable 3.0 received a great review on TechNewsWorld this month. Here are some notable excerpts from the article, written by Jack M. Germain:

"For any computing environment that requires tight control over who can run what applications, Faronics` Anti-Executable 3.0 may be the answer. The program prevents anything that is not explicitly allowed from executing. End of story."

"Faronics` Anti-Executable 3.0, which allows a computer to run approved applications only, is one of the most comprehensive ways available to improve worker and student productivity."

"For those who want a higher degree of assurance that unapproved applications or users will not harm their computers, this program is rock solid."

Read the full article to learn more!

New white paper - Security vs. Flexibility: Must IT Management Choose?

IT Managers are tasked with making the desktop environment more secure and locked down to a uniform corporate standard, yet flexible enough to handle the myriad of exceptions that arise across the enterprise. Centralized Configuration Management (CCM) tools are great, especially in environments with branch offices, but CCM tools can’t do the big job of making your environment inherently more secure or more flexible. This paper focuses on how IT Managers can leverage CCM tools along with other techniques and tools to have it all: security, a uniform standard, and flexibility when needed. Read the white paper.

Instead of paying attention to the course material, students were surfing the Internet.”

Faronics Insight enabled the instructors of Lewis and Clark Community College to harness the educational and productive aspects of their computers while minimizing classroom distractions. “Now that we have Insight, we [the instructors] are able to stop students from surfing the Internet and disrupting classroom instruction,” says Georgia Voils, another Internet Course Technician at Lewis & Clark Community College. “I also like the feature where students can quietly notify the instructor that they have a question without fear of disrupting the class.” “Once I was introduced to the Insight Teacher Console, it didn’t take me long to learn how to use it in a variety of ways,” says Georgia. “For example, even when supervising students during examinations, I still have to answer the phone and check other students into the lab. This used to be a very difficult task; but now with Insight it’s a breeze!” Read the Case Study.

Faronics Insight Case Study - Now Available

Although computers in schools have the power to enhance the classroom experience for both students and teachers, the benefits can easily be lost to distractive elements such as games, instant messaging, and web surfing.
For Josh Kolka, Technology Administrator for Bangor Township Schools, helping teachers battle these distractive elements was becoming a priority.
"Some of our labs have computers assembled into pods," says Josh. "It's great when it comes to fostering collaboration and teamwork between students, but it does make it very difficult for a teacher to monitor what students are doing at all times. Teachers would walk around the classroom to monitor activities, but once they walked to another pod a student could easily visit a game website and stop doing their work."

As a result, Josh was receiving requests from lab teachers for a solution that enabled them to view and control student workstations from their own workstation. Although Josh wanted to help these teachers, he was not sure if Bangor Township Schools could implement such a solution due to the potential cost and time commitment required for planning and implementation.

Read the Case Study to learn how Faronics Insight helped Bangor Township Schools gain total control over classroom technology and student attention. Read the full press release.

Faronics Releases Deep Freeze Server Standard and Enterprise

Faronics announces the release and immediate availability of Deep Freeze Server v6 in Standard and Enterprise editions. This new Server edition of the award-winning Deep Freeze utility guarantees that Windows 2000/2003 Servers are always kept at peak performance and software support issues are dramatically reduced or entirely eliminated. Deep Freeze Server is the next logical evolution of the Deep Freeze product line. Windows servers can be incredibly expensive to configure and maintain, particularly if an organization relies on outside contractors to fulfill that role. Deep Freeze guarantees that once your server is configured to a baseline standard, that baseline is achieved on every reboot. Disk corruption, fragmentation, and even viruses and spyware on an Internet-facing server are now a thing of the past. Visit the product page for more info.

On August 17th, a new worm called Zotob, which works by exploiting the plug-and-play feature of Microsoft's Windows 2000 operating system, began to wreak havoc in many corporations around the world. But the worm that is being called one of the fastest spreading infections in history, poses no concern for computer users who have installed Faronics Anti-Executable. In fact, before the Zotob worm was even released, Faronics Anti-Executable had the ability to stop it, thanks to Anti-Executable's unique whitelist concept. Read the full press release.

New Faronics White Paper Discusses Blacklist and Whitelist-Based Software

The Faronics Content Library has a new white paper that discusses the emergence of whitelist-based technology as a response to the drawbacks found in much of the traditional blacklist-based software currently used to fight malware. Faronics Anti-Executable uses whitelist technology to provide a way to ensure all programs and applications loaded as part of a standard system configuration are the only ones authorized to execute; this effectively blocks almost all forms of malware and prevents any unauthorized executable from ever installing or running. Read the white paper.

Faronics Deep Freeze validated by Microsoft's Shared Computer Vision

The Faronics Deep Freeze restart to restore concept has received validation by Microsoft‘s announcement today of the beta program for the Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP SP2. Deep Freeze already protects and preserves the Standard System Configuration on over five million workstations worldwide with a simple reboot. Each restart eradicates all changes and resets the computer to its original state, right down to the last byte. The GUI Enterprise Console provides a central method to install, control and manage all of the workstations in an environment. "We are pleased that Microsoft has validated the restart to restore concept that Faronics pioneered more than five years ago with Deep Freeze," said Farid Ali, President & CEO of Faronics. "We support Microsoft‘s decision to provide the Shared Computer Toolkit, because it endorses Deep Freeze and the value its restart to restore solution already offers the industry." "We share a desire with Faronics to help improve the security, privacy and manageability of Windows XP SP2 in shared computer environments," said John Eversole, Product Manager for the Shared Computer Toolkit at Microsoft Corp. "While the Shared Computer Toolkit takes advantage of technologies that are inherent to Windows XP SP2, other solutions such as Deep Freeze are available for customers who run legacy versions of Windows or who need centralized management of these features." Read the full press release.

Faronics is excited to announce the official release of Faronics Anti-Executable Enterprise and Faronics Anti-Executable Standard.
